WASHINGTON, DC–Jim Himes, the top Democrat on the U.S. House Intelligence Committee, introduced a key amendment on Tuesday to a reauthorization of Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA).
The amendment would require FBI agents to seek approval from a special court any time they want to use Section 702 of FISA to obtain Americans’ communications data.
Himes said in a statement, “I hope to show there is a path to build on those reforms to require court approval before the FBI can access the results of any query involving a US person, political organization, or nonprofit.”
Himes told Politico, which broke the story, that “FISA 702 is too critical to allow it to expire, but the legitimate concerns about the possibility of abuse also demand that we consider additional reforms, exactly what my amendment seeks to accomplish.” Without congressional action, Section 702 is due to expire on Monday, April 20.
