WESTPORT — Cooling centers have opened in town as a hot, humid and smoky dome of air settles across the region for the next several days.
The soaring temperatures, combined with high humidity, are expected to push the heat index into the 90-degree range through the weekend, according to the National Weather Service.
And Canadian wildfire again are contributing to “unhealthy” air quality across the region, particularly for people with respiratory and related conditions. The air quality for Westport, updated hourly, can be checked at the AirNow website.
Local air-conditioned facilities open for people seeking relief from the heat and poor air quality include:

The Westport Fire Department, in a weather advisory Wednesday afternoon, warned people to take precautions.
“With high heat, humidity, and smoky air, it is crucial that everyone protects themselves and loved ones. Stay hydrated, seek shade, and limit outdoor activities,” acting Fire Chief Nick Marsan said in the statement.
Signs of heat-related illness, fire officials warn, include muscle cramps, fatigue, weakness, dizziness, fainting, headaches, nausea and vomiting.
Children, adults 65 years old and over, those without access to air conditioning, outdoor workers and those with chronic health conditions are most vulnerable, officials said.
