April 27 – George R. Kalan, ”A Successful Failure: The Rescue of Apollo 13”
George Kalan began his career as an aerospace engineer who, after redesigning the backup attitude-control system that was eventually used in the rescue of Apollo 13, served as Lead Engineer responsible for software development, testing, mission support, and astronaut training activities for Apollo 12 through Apollo 15. During the Apollo 13 rescue mission, Kalan coordinated all autopilot-related activities with MIT from a control room at the Houston Manned Spacecraft Center. As a member of the team, George received the Presidential Medal of Freedom. After a long and successful career in various business ventures, he is now semi-retired but finds time to mentor for many organizations as well as serve as Chairman of the Y’s Men Ancient Mariners sailing and boating group. In his talk, George will share with us his part in helping rescue Apollo 3.
