WESTPORT — Supt. of Schools Thomas Scarice was the highest-paid school district employee last calendar year.

Teacher salaries alone in 2023-24 are projected to cost nearly 4 percent more than they do now. The proposed budget for the new fiscal year, which the Board of Education has yet to sign off on, stands at $136.4 million, a requested increase of 5.33 percent.

“Over time, total salaries and wages consistently make up approximately 65 percent of the overall school district budget,” Scarice told the Westport Journal on Wednesday. “Along with health benefits, these two items account for 80 percent of the annual operating budget.”

Scarice also was the most highly compensated school district employee in 2021.

Here are Westport public schools’ top 25 earners from 2022:

  1. Scarice was paid $299,860 in salary, $13,478 in vacation compensation, and a $5,000 tax sheltered annuity, totaling $318,339, according to records released by the schools’ chief financial officer, Elio Longo.
  2. Longo was number two on the list of top-compensated district employees, paid $245,369 in salary, plus $16,791 in vacation compensation for a total of $262,162.
  3. Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning Anthony Buono, had a salary of $232,427 and $15,906 in vacation compensation, for a total of $248,333.
  4. Assistant Superintendent for Pupil Services Michael Rizzo earned $226,446 in salary and $15,382 in vacation compensation, for a total of $241,829.
  5. Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources and General Administration John Bayers was paid $211,162 in salary and 9,598.30 in vacation compensation for a total of $220,761.
  6. Staples High School Principal Thomas Stafford had a salary of $218,077.
  7. Bedford Middle School Principal Adam Rosen had a salary of $198,580.
  8. Coleytown Middle School Principal Kris Szabo had a salary of $197,080.
  9. Saugatuck Elementary School Principal Elizabeth Messler had a salary of $191,820.
  10. Director of Technology Natalie Carrignan was paid a salary of $191,820.
  11. Greens Farms Elementary School Principal Kevin Cazzetta had a salary of $191,820.
  12. Coleytown Elementary School Principal Janna Sirowich was paid a $191,820 salary.
  13. Long Lots Elementary School Principal Kimberly Ambrosio had a salary of $185,438.
  14. Kings Highway Elementary School Principal Tracey Carbone was paid a $185,438 salary.
  15. Health Services Supervisor Suzanne Levasseur’s salary was $158,764, with other/extra earnings of $24,890, for a total of $183,655.
  16. Staples High School Assistant Principal Patrick Micinilio, had a salary of $179,682, and other/extra compensation of $1,523, for a total of $181,205.
  17. Coleytown Middle School Assistant Principal Micah Lawrence, had a salary of $179,682 and other/extra compensation of $500, for a total of $180,182.
  18. Bedford Middle School Assistant Principal/Special Education Administrator Denise Emmerthal had a salary of $179,682, and other/extra earnings of $500, for a total of $180,182.
  19. Staples High School Assistant Principal/Special Education Administrator Rosemarie Ampha had a salary of $179,682, and other/extra earnings of $500, for a total of $180,182.
