WESTPORT — No, you weren’t imagining it.

An earthquake measuring about 4.8 magnitude on the Richter scale — categorized as tremors that can be felt, but cause little to no damage — rumbled through Westport and across the northeastern U.S. about 10:20 a.m. Friday.

An alert issued by Westport’s emergency services confirmed that a “small earthquake” was felt locally, but there were no immediate reports of damage.

Supt. of Schools Thomas Scarice, in an email, reported that students and staff also felt the earthquake, and “While this was disconcerting at the moment the earthquake occurred, I can assure you that our students and staff are safe.

“Classes and activities will continue as usual for the remainder of the day,” he added.

News reports indicate the epicenter of the quake was in west-central New Jersey, about 50 miles outside New York City.

The tremors — about 15 to 20 seconds locally — were felt throughout the Tri-State area and Pennsylvania.

New York news outlets indicate there are reports of structural damage in the area of the quake’s New Jersey epicenter.
