WESTPORT — Frosty … Temperatures for sure, and maybe even the snowman, are in the forecast Saturday.

That has prompted officials to open local warming centers offering shelter from the winter onslaught — appropriately, since the Winter Solstice, or first day of the season, arrived officially at 4:21 a.m. Saturday.
The state’s “Severe Cold Weather Protocol” has been activated by Gov. Ned Lamont from noon Saturday through noon Tuesday, Christmas Eve, in anticipation of extremely cold weather.
Daytime high temperatures are not expected to rise above 32 degrees, or freezing, during that period, according to the National Weather Service, with overnight lows plunging near the single digits.
There also is a chance of light snow continuing from overnight into Saturday morning, the weather service said.
And a white Christmas is possible, as snow is again in the daytime forecast for Christmas Eve.
People looking for assistance or emergency accommodations should call “211” or check Connecticut’s 211 website that provides a list of resources, such as transportation to a shelter or warming center.
In Westport, people who need assistance also can contact the town’s Department of Human Services at 203-341-1050 during regular office hours, Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
“We are committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all Westport residents during this extreme cold weather, Fire Chief Nicholas Marsan, the town’s emergency management director, said in a statement.
“Please take precautions, check on neighbors who may need assistance and don’t hesitate to reach out for help if necessary,” he added.
Local warming centers will be open at the following sites (check websites for holiday schedules):
Westport Center for Senior Activities: 21 Imperial Ave.
Westport Library: 20 Jesup Road.
Westport Museum for History and Culture: 25 Avery Place.
Westport-Weston Family YMCA: 14 Alan Raymond Lane.
