WESTPORT — Fire up the grill for the “Great Westport Burger Contest.”

The contest, organized by the Westport-Weston Chamber of Commerce, allows the public to cast ballots for their favorite burger-makers during the month of March.

So far, 17 eateries have signed up to compete in seven categories: Best Classic Burger, Best Cheese Burger, Best Gourmet Burger, Best Veggie Burger, Best Non-Beef Burger (fish, turkey, lamb, etc.), Best Fast-Food Burger and Best Slider.

The contestants include: Boathouse, Jr’s, La Plage, Little Barn, Match Burger, Nômade, Old Mill Grocery, Organika, Rizzuto’s, Shake Shack, Southport Diner, Spotted Horse, Blondinit, The Porch, The Whelk, Viva Zapata and Zucca Gastrobar.

Each of the competing restaurants can enter up to four categories, but can only win two at most.

Winners will be determined by burger aficionados casting ballots via the chamber’s “Great Westport Burger” webpage. Each voter also will be entered into a drawing to win a free burger from one of the seven winning restaurants. Participants also encouraged to use the hashtag — #greatwestportburger — when posting about the event on social media, according to the chamber’s announcement.

“This is a fun way for our community to interact, support our local restaurants and best of all get to eat lots of hamburgers,” Matthew Mandell, the chamber’s executive director, said in a statement announcing the contest.

Winners will be announced April 1.
