WESTPORT — More programs for people with special needs are planned at the Westport Weston Family YMCA, in partnership with Special Olympics Connecticut.

Offerings are designed to accommodate those with diverse social, behavioral and physical abilities, according to an announcement from the Y. These programs include gymnastics, swimming and open play, as well as organized sports like basketball and soccer.

And next spring, the YMCA plans to host its first Special Needs Prom, an event for those 14 years old and over. It will feature a red-carpet entrance, prom attire, a DJ, dancing, photo booth, food and other activities.

To help plan and manage these program, the Y has hired Brittany Williams as its new special-needs coordinator.

“Providing individuals with fun, friendship, hope and resilience is my passion and what I strive to help provide everyone involved in our special-needs programming at WWFY,” Williams said in the statement.

“Ensuring a welcoming space that supports the opportunity for each person to learn and grow no matter their ability is my goal.”
