WESTPORT — It’s an afternoon of food, fun and festivity.

The “Slice of Saugatuck” festival, a celebration of the neighborhood’s cuisine, commerce and culture, unfolds for a 12th year from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7. (Rain date is Sept. 14.)

The festival, organized by the Westport-Weston Chamber of Commerce, will take place in the general area bracketed by Railroad Place, Riverside Avenue and Saugatuck Avenue.

Slice of Saugatuck tickets, sold Saturday only at the venue beginning at 1:45 p.m., cost $15, and $5 for children 5 t0 12 years old. Sales are cash or credit card only.

The event will showcase offerings by more than four dozen restaurants, shops and galleries around the area, many highlighting special cuisine or deals on merchandise.

Music will be performed by seven bands throughout the afternoon, providing a festive backdrop for attractions that include two beer gardens, roving performers and dance demonstrations, the Fire Department’s antique engine, bouncy castles, balloon creations and face painting.

Attendees also can get their passport-tickets stamped to be entered into a lottery for gift certificates at participating Saugatuck businesses.

Proceeds from the Slice of Saugatuck festivals over the years have been donated to the Gillespie Center’s food pantry, which to date total about $49,000, according to the chamber.

Traffic, parking advisories

Police have issued the following traffic and parking advisories for the event:

• Railroad Place will be closed to traffic from Riverside Avenue to Franklin Street, from noon to 6 p.m., to allow vendors time to set up booths and disassemble equipment for the festival.

• The east side of Riverside Avenue, from Charles Street to Bridge Street, will be a temporary “No Parking” zone during the event.

• Other roads in the area will remain open to traffic, but police warn drivers to expect both heavy pedestrian traffic and vehicular congestion.

• Saugatuck Railroad Station’s parking lots, except Lot No. 2, will be available for event parking.
