WESTPORT–In its 26th annual “Booked for the Evening” fundraiser, The Westport Library will celebrate Emmy-award winning actress, producer, publisher and businesswoman Sarah Jessica Parker. The gala will take place September 10.

Parker is best known for her long-running role as Carrie Bradshaw on HBO’s “Sex and the City and the HBO Max spinoff “And Just Like That…

Voice for reading and libraries

But, “Sarah Jessica Parker is not only an esteemed actor and successful producer. She is also a powerful voice speaking about the importance of reading and of literature, and the important role that libraries play as American civic institutions,” Bill Harmer, The Westport Library’s executive director, said. “We could not possibly be more delighted to have her coming to the Library, and we’re thrilled to have the opportunity to introduce her to all her fans and admirers in Westport.”

Outside of her lengthy and much-acclaimed Hollywood career, Parker has had a long career of acting on Broadway – most recently alongside her longtime husband, Matthew Broderick in “Plaza Suite.” She also founded a production company, Pretty Matches Productions, and has served as an executive producer on several projects over the past 25 years.

Publisher

Parker is a strong advocate for literature and for a diversity of voices and stories across the country. She launched SJP Lit, a literary imprint focused on underrepresented voices.

“To censor a book is to limit imagination, curiosity, connection, empathy and inspiration,” Parker said during her PEN America Gala acceptance speech. “Libraries aren’t just buildings with shelves. They are a beacon. They are warm in the winter and cool in summer, and they are sanctuaries of possibility. They are a heartbeat of the neighborhood.”

Film depicts heroic librarians

Most recently, Parker executive produced The Librarians, which premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival. According to the festival, the film focuses on the culture war waged on school libraries.

Previous “Booked for the Evening” award recipients include Martin Scorsese, Alan Alda, Shonda Rhimes and 2024’s honoree, Billie Jean King.
