WESTPORT — A new placard stating the town’s values relating to diversity, equity and inclusion has been erected by the Saugatuck River near Jesup Green.

The placard, which features photos of some familiar Westport residents, highlights the town’s commitment to “fostering a civic culture that provides the equitable respect, belonging and treatment of all citizens, students, employees and visitors.”

As part of a Historical Marker Project, the town, in consultation with TEAM Westport and the Westport Museum of History and Culture, is currently working on an initiative to correct prior versions of Westport’s written history that don’t accurately detail its past as it relates to issues of inclusion and equality. New markers have recently been erected at Town Hall and at 22 1/2 Main Street.

On Oct. 13, 2021, the town adopted a statement on diversity, equity and inclusivity.

The Representative Town Meeting followed with a resolution condemning racism as a public health crisis.
