
WESTPORT — Artwork and marchers will fill downtown streets over the Memorial Day weekend, and police have issued traffic advisories and parking guidance for the three-day weekend.
The Westport Fine Arts Festival, an open-air exhibition of work by 165 artists and craftspeople, will unfold along Main and Elm streets, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 24, and Sunday, May 25.
To accommodate the festival, the following traffic changes will be in effect:
- Sigrid Schultz parking lot on Elm Street will be off limits after 10 p.m. Thursday, May 22. Vehicles in the lot after that time will be towed.
- Main Street, from Post Road East to Avery Place, and Elm Street, from Main Street to the Serena & Lily store on Elm Street, will both be closed from 6 a.m. Friday, May 23, to 10 p.m. Sunday, May 25.
Parking for the event will be available in the Parker Harding, Baldwin, Taylor/upper Jesup and Imperial lots.
The day after the arts fest wraps up, the annual Memorial Day parade steps off at 9 a.m. Monday, May 26.
The line of march follows the usual route through downtown, starting on Riverside Avenue, heading east on Post Road East, crossing the Saugatuck River via the Ruth Steinkraus Cohen Bridge, to Myrtle Avenue passing Town Hall, then to Main Street and ending at Parker Harding Plaza. A remembrance ceremony will take place immediately after the parade on Veterans Green.
In case of rain, the program will take place at 10 a.m. in Town Hall.
Road closures in effect from 8:30 to 11 a.m. Monday, May 26, include:
- Riverside Avenue, between Treadwell Avenue and Post Road East.
- Post Road, between Sylvan Road and Compo Road North.
- Wilton Road, between and Post Road East and Kings Highway North.
- Myrtle Avenue, between Post Road East and Main Street.
