WESTPORT — The threat of stormy weather — downpours possibly accompanied by harzardous thunder and lightning — has forced cancellation of the Yankee Doodle Fair on Friday night.

Officials of the Westport Woman’s Club, the fair’s sponsors, called off Friday’s schedule of events in the four-day fair as a precaution because of the forecast warning of storm conditions beginning about 5 p.m. Friday.

“Unfortunately, due to impending weather, the Westport Woman’s Club must cancel the Yankee Doodle Fair for tonight [Friday]. Please join us Saturday from 1-10 p.m. and/or Sunday from 1-5 p.m. Thank you in advance for your support!,” the club said in a statement.

A “Hazardous Weather Outlook” has been issued by the National Weather Service for Westport and the rest of the Tri-State region for Friday evening into early Saturday.

In addition to rain, possibly heavy at times, “thunderstorms could be strong to severe, capable of producing gust to damaging winds, large hail and brief heavy downpours. Localized flash flooding is possible,” according to the NWS forecast.

The Yankee Doodle Fair, one of Westport’s most popular springtime attractions, opened Thursday night and is scheduled to continue from 1-10 p.m. Saturday, June 15, and 1-5 p.m. Sunday, June 16, on the Westport Women’s Club grounds, 44 Imperial Ave., and the municipal parking lot next door.

The Imperial Avenue lot will be closed to parking through Sunday to accommodate the event. No parking is allowed on Thomas Road and Imperial Avenue for the duration of the fair.
