WESTPORT — A community collaboration Saturday helped fill local food pantries fighting hunger in Westport.

A six-hour “Feed the Need” food collection, organized by the Police Department, took place in front of the Stop & Shop supermarket for the benefit of pantries at Homes with Hope’s Gillespie Center and the town’s Department of Human Services.

The project was carried out by volunteers from the Westport Woman’s Club, Westport Sunrise Rotary Club, Homes with Hope and the police.

Total volume of non-perishable foods donated by shoppers at the supermarket filled nearly 420 grocery bags, according to organizers.

The food will supplement the two local pantries’ programs to help people in need of food in these challenging times.
