WESTPORT–The community is invited to the Saugatuck Rowing Club for a fundraiser later this month supporting Hero to Hero, an organization that connects former military service members with first-responder careers, and an independent film, “Blue Bunny.”
The event takes place from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. March 28 at the club, 521 Riverside Avenue, Westport.
“Blue Bunny” is produced by Westport-based Verus Studios in partnership with the Academy Award-winning British production company Slick Films. The fundraiser will support the development of the short film, in which veteran mental health awareness outreach plays a role.
To further advance awareness of the issue, the filmmakers have partnered with Hero to Hero, whose mission is helping veterans transition from active duty into meaningful careers as first responders.
“Hero to Hero works to provide veterans with renewed purpose and community by guiding former service members into roles where they can continue serving others — including careers in firefighting, emergency response and public safety,” reads a press release from the movie’s producer, Rita Marcocci.

Among the forces impacted by the organization is the Westport Fire Department, which employs five veterans who completed the Hero to Hero program.
“The transition from military service to fire service is a natural fit, and our department is stronger because of it,” said Westport Fire Chief Nick Marsan. “We have seen firsthand the discipline and dedication these five individuals bring to Westport. This partnership provides veterans with a renewed sense of purpose while ensuring our community is protected by those who understand the true meaning of service.”
As part of the effort, The Boathouse Restaurant at the rowing club will feature a specialty “Hero Cocktail” throughout March, with all proceeds benefitting “Blue Bunny” and Hero To Hero.
“This event reflects the strong sense of community that defines Westport,” Marcocci said. “Bringing together the important work Hero to Hero is doing for our service men and women and a global film project creating awareness for veteran mental health demonstrates the power of building support systems that extend far beyond one evening.”
