WESTPORT — A little barn will be a big benefit for the Wakeman Town Farm menagerie, thanks to a local business.

Earth Animal, a Post Road East store offering all-natural products for dogs and cats, raised $20,000 to cover costs of constructing a new barn at the community farm.

The funds were collected through an in-store sales promotion called the “Little Barn Project,” which over six months set aside a percentage of sales for Wakeman Town Farm in addition to selling farm merchandise, according to a press statement.

The money raised through sales was then matched by store ownership to complete the barn construction budget.

“My sister Abbey and I visited Wakeman Town Farm and fell in love with the farm and all that it does for the community, the animals, children, families and their dedicated sustainability mission,” Merritt Goldstein of the Goldstein family, owners of Earth Animal, said in the press release.

“From that moment, we asked what we could do for the farm and began supplying food for the animals,” Goldstein added. “We quickly realized that the existing animal barn was very run down and needed to be rebuilt.”

“We are sincerely grateful for the support of Earth Animal and appreciate their grand donation and fundraising campaign for our new barn,” Nicole Gerber of the Wakeman Town Farm Committee, said in the release.

“Sustainability” has been a focus of Earth Animal’s mission since its founding in 1979, according to the statement, with the business dedicating 1 percent of annual net sales “to help pioneer a more sustainable future.”
