WESTPORT — A group opposed to the war in Gaza walked south along the Post Road Friday on their way from Ogunquit, Maine, to Washington, D.C.

The eight or so walkers in the Veterans for Peace’s “Peace Walk 2024” were on their way in the Bridgeport-to-Norwalk leg of their 600-mile journey, which began May 7 down east and is expected to end July 6 in the nation’s capital.

The group is critical of armed conflict in general, and lately, the war in Gaza.

Walkers on Friday carried a black, white, red and green Palestinian flag, another that read “Ceasefire Now,” a peace sign flag, and a flag with a white dove and the organization’s website address.

“There’s about a core group of eight,” said a man who identified himself only as “Chito,” of Waco, Texas, no last name.

“Our basic message is we need to do something about the climate, get rid of nuclear weapons, we’re against the war and we’re definitely speaking out about what Israel is doing in Gaza,” he said before trotting off to catch up with his group.

At one point, the group appeared to have been joined by locals who seemed to have different views.

A woman carried an Israeli flag, and a man held up a lawn sign depicting the Israeli flag.

“Go Israel!” cheered a woman from the Whole Foods parking lot. “This is amazing.”

Opinions aside, all shared the narrow shoulder of the Post Road peacefully.
