WESTPORT — The annual CT United Ride, which is held to commemorate the anniversary of 9-11, roared out of Sherwood Island State Park Saturday morning to do its traditional loop around a section of Fairfield County.

An estimated 3,000 motorcycles were part of the festivities, which resulted in some road closures when the group left the park to travel west one exit on I-95 at 11 a.m., then headed up Riverside Avenue and Wilton Road, toward Wilton.

The route ultimately went into Redding, then veered right, where it met Route 25 in Newtown and Monroe, then headed south to Bridgeport.

First Selectman Jim Marpe came out to Sherwood Island to welcome all the out-of-town bikers at the event, which was sponsored by the Uniformed Professional Fire Fighters Association, and included both fire and even police riders.
