WESTPORT — Coffey Modica, LLP, a law firm with offices in New York and New Jersey, has opened its state headquarters in a historic location on Jesup Road.

The firm includes founding partner Michael Coffey, who served as the Norwalk City Council president from 2005-07 and held several other city government posts. The local office is expected to be the base for 16 attorneys and staff.

Coffey Modica represents business and insurance companies in liability claims, excess property/casualty, medical malpractice, nursing and other professional industries.

Founded in 2021, the firm has since expanded to employ more than 70 attorneys and staff in six offices. Its clients include 12 of the 20 largest global insurance companies, handling cases in excess of $10 million, according to the law firm’s announcement.

Coffey, a designated American Board of Trial Advocates trial attorney, also served six years as the late-U.S. Sen. Joseph Lieberman’s appointee to the U.S. Military Academy Selection Committee for Annapolis, West Point and U.S. Merchant Marine academies.

The law firm’s new state headquarters has a legacy tied to the Jesups, historically one of Westport’s most prominent families. It is located in the Jesup Road Historic District, property once owned by Revolutionary War surgeon Dr. Ebenezer Jesup and his son Major Ebenezer Jesup, a grain trader. Relations of the Jesups were noted philanthropists, including endowing what is now the Westport Library.

The building is located next to the “Godillot Carriage House,” which at one time was owned by Julia Godillot, daughter of a Westport grocery merchant and wife of a French importer. For more information, call the Westport office of Coffey Modica at 203-896-5566.
