WESTPORT–A production of “Conscience” runs Nov. 14 – 30 at The Westport Community Theatre, 110 Myrtle Ave.

The comic drama, written by Joe DiPietro and directed by Alexander Kulcsar, is a dramatization of the events leading up to and shortly after US Senator Margaret Chase Smith’s famous June 1, 1950 speech from the Senate floor, “Declaration of Conscience.”

The deeply witty Smith is portrayed as concerned about the effect that red-baiting Senator Joseph McCarthy is having on the Senate, the media and the country. In her speech, Smith exhorts her colleagues to stop “thinking politically as Republicans and Democrats about elections and started thinking patriotically as Americans about national security based on individual freedom. It is high time that we all stopped being tools and victims of totalitarian techniques-techniques that, if continued here unchecked, will surely end what we have come to cherish as the American way of life.

The speech closes Act 1 of the play.

The cast includes Rachel Dalton, Ann Kinner, Tom Petrone and David Victor.

Curtain time for evening performances is 7:30 pm; Sunday performances are at 2:00 pm. Tickets are available at the box office or by calling 203-226-1983.
