WESTPORT–Celebrated alto saxophonist Vincent Herring, known for carrying the hard bop tradition of Cannonball Adderley and Jackie McLean, will perform with JazzFC artistic director Greg Wall at Jazz At The Post tonight Thursday, April 30. The evening will feature the scintillating music of saxophonists Lee Konitz and Warne Marsh, who were preeminent disciples of pianist and pedagogue Lennie Tristano.
The idea for the collaboration originated when Herring and Wall discovered their mutual appreciation for the music of Konitz and Marsh before a performance last winter at the Westport Library.
They will be joined by three artists familiar to local fans: Steve Sandberg on piano, Yuriy Galkin on bass, and Steve Johns on drums. This show offers a rare opportunity to hear the captivating tunes of Konitz and Marsh, along with selections from their mentor Tristano.
Herring’s intense, soulful, multi-noted style and ebullient swing have excited audiences worldwide. He began playing saxophone at age 11 and won a berth in the United States Military Academy Band at West Point by age 17. After moving to New York City, he first toured with the Lionel Hampton Big Band. His virtuosity led to a nine-year relationship with Nat Adderley, producing nine albums and touring globally.
Herring has also worked with jazz legends including Louis Hayes, Cedar Walton for over 20 years, Freddie Hubbard, Dizzy Gillespie, and the Mingus Big Band, which won a Grammy in 2010. His discography includes over 20 titles as a leader and over 250 as a sideman.
