NORWALK — Two musical groups are partnering to present a monumental Felix Mendelssohn oratorio inspired by the life of an Old Testament prophet.

The Norwalk Symphony Orchestra and Fairfield County Chorale will present Mendelssohn’s Elijah at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 16th at the Norwalk Concert Hall.

“The powerful and dramatic oratorio brings the Old Testament prophet to life through vivid music and masterful storytelling,” the organizations said in a press release. “With soaring arias, majestic choruses, and remarkable emotional depth, it stands as one of the greatest choral masterpieces of the Romantic era. Elijah captivates audiences with its blend of lyrical beauty and intense theatricality, making it a favorite for choirs and orchestras worldwide, and is a marker of the composer’s pride in his Jewish heritage.”

Musical directors Jonathan Yates of the Norwalk Symphony Orchestra and David Rosenmeyer of the Fairfield County Chorale said the concert is the culmination of years of discussions. Audience members are asked to bring a non-perishable food item to donate to The Pantry at CT State Community College Norwalk.
