WESTPORT–The Westport Community Theatre is staging a production of the play “Conscience” in November. The director is casting two roles and is holding an open audition at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept 2.

Auditioners will read from the script – no monologues required. Sides are available on request.

The auditions will take place at the Westport Community Theatre, 110 Myrtle Avenue, Westport.

About Conscience

In the 1950s, as Senator Joseph McCarthy lies and bullies his way to power, the only Republican senator with the courage to challenge him is Margaret Chase Smith of Maine. Conscience is the story of a remarkable woman who stood up for what was right and refused to back down.

The New York Times referred to the play as a “timely boxing match of a history play.”

Production runs Nov. 14-30; no performance on Thanksgiving

This is a four-character drama. The roles of Senators Smith and McCarthy are cast.

Seeking:

WILLIAM LEWIS JR. Age range 30s. Senator Chase’s executive assistant and her right hand. Handsome, bright, disciplined. He knows the ins and outs of Washington. Lewis ran Smith’s campaigns; he is also her closest friend.

JEAN KERR. Age range 25-30. Young attractive acolyte of Senator McCarthy. Bright, ambitious, and fiercely loyal. Secretly in a romantic relationship with the senator (they later married.) She is accustomed to being underestimated.
