WESTPORT — Heavy snow forecast over the next day has forced the Westport Library to postpone the spring Malloy Lecture in the Arts, featuring musician and artist Richard Butler, which was planned Tuesday night.
The event, first of two Malloy Lectures planned by the library this year, has been rescheduled to 7 p.m. Saturday, April 1, according to an announcement Monday afternoon.
Tickets sold for the lecture’s original Feb. 28 date will be honored for the rescheduled date and time, library officials said.
The new date for the Malloy lecture adds Butler’s appearance to the slate of attractions featured during the library’s four-day VersoFest from March 30-April 2.
Butler’s appearance will replace a previously scheduled VersoFest laser light show on April 1. The laser light show will be rescheduled for a later date, according to the library’s announcement.
As previously planned, Butler, perhaps best known as lead vocalist for the British band, Psychedelic Furs, still will be joined in conversation by musician, record producer and Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Chris Frantz, the drummer for both Talking Heads and Tom Tom Club.
Butler was interested in painting before gaining fame as a rock musician, having studied at Epsom Art School outside London, according to a library publicity release. He continued to nurture that talent in artwork and designs for the Psychedelic Furs, which rose to popularity in the late 1970s and ’80s.
During that time, Butler focused on the band and its music, but in the 1990s he resumed painting with renewed attention.
Butler’s paintings, described in the library release as “dynamic compositions that are at once naturalistic and hallucinatory,” have been exhibited in galleries around the world.
The April 1 Malloy Lecture in the Arts also can be viewed via live-stream, and will be posted later on the library’s YouTube channel.
