WESTPORT — An encore performance of “The Laramie Project,” a dramatization of events surrounding the 1998 murder of a 21-year-old gay college student in Laramie, Wyo., will be staged Dec. 10 by the UU Players to benefit the Triangle Community Center.
The troupe, which performed the play three times last month, plans the benefit performance at 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10, at the Unitarian Church in Westport, 10 Lyons Plains Road.
A $20 donation is suggested to attend, with proceeds benefiting the Norwalk-based Triangle Community Center, which sponsors programs for the LGBTQ community around Fairfield County. Seats can be reserved by clicking here.
Following the performance, there will be a discussion with director Jim Luongo and the cast.
The play recounts events of Oct. 7, 1998, when Matthew Shepard, a student at the University of Wyoming, was beaten because he was gay and left tied to a fence. He died from his wounds several days later.
“The Laramie Project” was written by Moisés Kaufman and members of the Tectonic Theater Company, based on interviews with hundreds of Laramie residents and news reports about the circumstances of Shepard’s death.
The UU Players’ production has no set, featuring 10 actors on stage, portraying more than 60 characters, all of whom were people living in Laramie at the time of Shepard’s murder.
