WESTPORT – A flower show at the Westport Library last weekend featured a patriotic flair to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the country.

“American Spirit 250: A Small Standard Patriotic Flower Show” by the Westport Garden Club brightened up the library July 11-12.

The show centered around the colors of the American flag and other patriotic themes, according to Nathalie Fonteyne, president of the club.

Three shows in 2026

Last week’s show was the second of three planned by the WGC. The club began its celebration of America 250 in April with creative floral displays placed throughout town. The third display, during Constitution Week, will begin Sept. 17 at town hall.

For last weekend’s show, the people’s choice winner, who also won the best-in-show award from the judges, was Larry Huzi of the Branford Garden Club. The award of horticultural excellence went to Westport Garden Club member Topsy Siderowf.

The show was overseen by club members Kelle Ruden and Kara McKenna Wong. The design categories had names inspired by the song “America the Beautiful,” including “From Sea to Shining Sea” and “Amber Waves.”

Also included in the show were four education exhibitors: Federated Garden Clubs of Connecticut; Bee Resilient Project; Daughters of the American Revolution, Drum Hill Chapter; and VFW Post 399.

The show was evaluated by accredited flower show judges from National Garden Clubs, Inc., and it received a score of 90-plus.
