NEW HAVEN — A tense and momentous reunion between two cousins, one on a temporary release from prison, is at the center of a play that will begin its run this week at the Yale Repertory Theatre.

Furlough’s Paradise will begin its previews at 8 p.m. on Friday, April 24th. Opening night is scheduled for 8 p.m. on Thursday, April 30th, and the show will run through May 16th. The production will mark the end of Yale Repertory Theatre’s 2025-2026 season, and is the last one under the leadership of outgoing artistic director James Bundy.

The story, written by David Geffen School of Drama at Yale graduate a.k. payne, follows a meeting between two cousins who were born in the same year but have taken vastly different paths in their lives. Sade (Lauren F. Walker) is on a three-day furlough from prison, while Mina (Tiffany McLarty) is returning from the West Coast. “Realism, poetry, and Afro-surrealism likewise collide and enjoin in Furlough’s Paradise as it explores both American society’s confines and its characters’ utopian visions beyond them,” Yale Repertory Theatre says in its description.
