WESTPORT — Gold ribbons are local symbols of support for observance of “Childhood Cancer Awareness Month” during September, according to Circle of Care, a nonprofit that provides assistance to families who have a child with cancer.

Ribbons will be posted around town during the last two weeks of September to raise awareness about childhood cancer, which afflicts more than 15,000 youngsters in the U.S. annually, including an estimated 200-plus in Connecticut, Circle of Care said.

In recognition of the observance, a proclamation has been issued by First Selectwoman Jennifer Tooker. “I encourage all Westporters to observe Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and support this cause that so deeply impacts families throughout our community,” Tooker said in a press statement.

Kings Highway Elementary School, bedecked in gold ribbons by families, also organized a day last week when students and staff wore something gold-colored and many donated $1 to support the cause.

Circle of Care provides “practical, emotional and financial support to children in treatment and their families,” according to the group’s statement. Since the organization was established in 2003, it has helped more than 3,200 families, providing over $5 million in services.
