WESTPORT — Bonds shared by firefighters cross borders between neighboring communities … and around the globe.
Even war zones are no barrier to firefighters’ mutual commitment to protect the public and support each other.
True to that spirit, the Westport Fire Department has donated personal protective gear, including coats, pants and boots, to firefighters in Ukraine.
Fire Marshal Nathaniel Gibbons, who organized the project, on Tuesday delivered equipment no longer used locally for a shipment to emergency-services personnel in the nation engulfed by Russian attacks.
“Firefighters support one another around the county or the world,” Gibbons said in a statement announcing the donation.
“The men and women of Ukraine fighting fire under war conditions reached out for our support, so we responded. We support them and their fight for freedom,” he added.
Gibbons thanked Westport resident Mark Yurkiw for helping to facilitate the effort. Yurkiw, who is fluent in Ukrainian, expedited communications and logistics to get the gear shipped to Ukraine.
“There are raging fires in cities, forests and fields from the numerous bombing attacks which the firefighters are working around the clock to put out,” Fire Chief Michael Kronick said in the statement.
“We know that our equipment is going to save lives and help the firefighters.”
Fire officials pointed out that although Westport’s donated equipment is past its expiration date for use in the U.S., it is clean, serviceable and well-suited for the task of protecting Ukrainian firefighters.
