WESTPORT — Two Norwalk men face a series of charges in connection with the theft of checks from a Westport woman last fall, police said.
Anner Cornejo-Fernandez, 37, and Ronnie Ortiz, 44, both were arrested this week.
Cornejo-Fernandez was charged with criminal attempt to commit fourth-degree larceny, second-degree forgery, conspiracy to commit second-degree forgery and tampering with or fabricating physical evidence.
Ortiz was charged with third-degree larceny, second-degree forgery and conspiracy to commit second-degree forgery.
Police launched an investigation after a woman complained that two blank checks had been stolen from her car sometime between last Oct. 28 and Nov. 4.
One of the stolen checks, made out to “Ronnie Ortiz” in the amount of $3,500, was deposited into a Bank of America account that a detective learned belonged to Ortiz, according to the report.
The other check, made out to “Cash” for $2,000, was not accepted for deposit in Cornejo-Fernandez’s bank account, police said.
During a later interview with detectives, Ortiz said that his brother-in-law, Cornejo-Fernandez, had given him the $3,500 check as payment for work that he had done, police said.
Cornejo-Fernandez, when interviewed by detectives, reportedly admitted stealing the checks from the woman’s car while it was being serviced at a dealership in Darien, where he worked.
After stealing the checks, police said, Cornejo-Fernandez gave one to Ortiz and tried to deposit the other himself.
Warrants for the arrest of both men were issued, and Ortiz turned himself in March 17 at Police Department headquarters, while Cornejo-Fernandez turned himself in the next day.
Ortiz was released after posting $20,000 bond and is scheduled to be arraigned March 25 at state Superior Court in Stamford.
Cornejo-Fernandez was released after posting $25,000 bond and faces arraignment March 31 at state Superior Court in Stamford.
