WESTPORT — Your once-festive Christmas tree need not meet an ignominious end in a landfill or burn pile.

Extend the tree’s life cycle by recycling it.

The Westport Winter Farmers Market on Thursday, Jan. 6, offers that green option for those who bring their trees for Action Waste Solution’s tree-recycling program.

The market will be open during its usual Thursday hours, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Gilbertie’s Herbs and Garden Center, 7 Sylvan Lane.

There is a suggested $10 donation to recycle a tree.

“Every year we turn hundreds of Christmas trees into usable compost,” Nicola LaRiccia, co-founder of Action Waste Solutions, said in a statement announcing the farmers market’s tree-recycling project.

“We’ll take trees of any size in their natural state, without ornaments or garland,” she said.

Lori Cochran-Dougall, executive director of the Westport Farmers Market, added, “Throughout the year we support the efforts of Action Waste Solutions to recycle and re-use food and trees that would otherwise be trashed.”
