SOUTHPORT — The Pequot Library will lead a special exhibition tour this weekend to explore changing attitudes toward children and education at the advent of the United States.

A guided behind-the-scenes tour of “Early American Children’s Books and the Shaping of American Identity” will take place at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 9th. The event is part of the Pequot Library’s series of programs on American voices and perspectives in recognition of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

The library notes how the American Revolution helped usher in a new market for print materials that, for the first time, included text and illustrations aimed at young readers. The exhibition, on view through May 31st, draws from the Children’s Historical Collection and highlights how children’s books published in the years after U.S. independence “reflect the changing political, economic, and social climate of the young nation.”

Registration is required. For more information on the event, click here.
