WILTON — No FCIAC team had found a way to beat Ridgefield this winter — until Tuesday, that is, when Staples boys basketball ball team did convincingly.
No. 4-seed Wreckers upset No. 1 Ridgefield, 73-57, in the conference semifinals at neutral site Wilton High, advancing to Thursday’s championship contest against No. 2 Trumbull, back on the Wilton court, at 7 p.m.
Staples, which lost to Ridgefield in a 48-46 nail-biter during the regular season, fell behind 15-7 after one quarter of play and was locked in a battle at halftime, trailing 27-25.
But the Wreckers went ahead 45-41 through three quarters and pulled away late.
Sam Clachko, held to three points in the first quarter, went on to steal the show and pour in 40, highlighted by seven 3-pointers and an 11-for-12 night at the foul line.
Adam Udell scored 13, Nick Sikorski hit a pair of 3-pointers for his six points and Caleb Smith added a 3-pointer.
Staples last lost a game Feb. 12 when Trumbull defeated the Wreckers 55-39. Since then, Staples has reeled off six straight wins, including two FCIAC tourney battles.
