Wreckers to face Greenwich in girls lacrosse tourney action

WESTPORT — The Staples High girls lacrosse team, the No. 12 seed in the Class L State Tournament, crushed No. 21 seed Shelton, 14-4, in qualifying round action Friday.

With the home field win, the Wreckers earned a trip to familiar FCIAC foe Greenwich, the No. 5 seed, in the first round. The teams will meet at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Staples was coming off a 17-3 loss to Wilton in the FCIAC Tournament quarterfinals. Greenwich defeated Staples 13-8 in their regular-season meeting.

Andy Hutchison has been covering school sports — including Staples athletics — as well as news and feature stories in Fairfield County, since the 1990s.
