WESTPORT — Staples High’s basketball teams both qualified for state tournament action, but the girls’ season has ended following an opening round loss.

Staples girls, ranked No. 22 in the Class LL bracket, fell 61-35 at No. 11 Mercy of Middletown in the tourney’s first round Wednesday, eliminating them from action.

The boys basketball squad, coming off a narrow loss Thursday in the FCIAC title game, gets back on the court in the state Division I tourney next Thursday, March 7.

Coach David Goldshore’s team, the No. 12 seed in the state competition, will visit No. 5 East Catholic of Manchester in the second round at 6:30 p.m. Both teams, like most in the bracket, had a first-round bye.

The bracket has just 17 qualifiers, and with an uneven number of teams, No. 16 Greenwich and No. 17 Fairfield Prep have to play a first-round game Friday for the right to visit top seed Notre Dame-West Haven.

On the ice, the Stapes hockey team is the No. 16 seed in the state D-III bracket, and hits the road Monday to take on No. 1 Brookfield-Bethel-Danbury-Immaculate in the first tourneys round (time to be announced).
