Adam Udell became the Staples lacrosse career points record holder in the No. 3 Wreckers’ 23-0 win over No. 14 Norwich Free Academy during Class LL State Tournament action in Westport on Wednesday.
He went into the game at 228 closing in on the record of 229 held by 2016 graduate Michael Reale. Udell scored the first goal and assisted the second to get to 230 career points.
Staples coaches then called timeout and took Udell out of the game with an announcement to the crowd.
Udell also has the most points in a single season as well as the most assists in a single season. This year he has 104 points, averaging 5.5 points per game as the Wreckers look to make a run deep into the state playoffs.
In addition to Udell’s two points in the win over NFA, Justin DiDonato racked up five goals and three assists. Tristan Benton recorded three goals and four assists, J.C. Gura had two goals and three assists and Nick Weil had two goals and two assists to lead the offense.
Will Fleming and Charlie Clark both had two goals, Tristan Schaefer and Connor Petrosino both notched two assists. Justin Halky, Ean Frankel, John Caggiano, Sam DiGiovanni, Asher Vengrow, Luke Bernier and Trey Calabro all scored a goal. Hunter Pallai and Eroic Skolnick both recorded an assist.
In net, sophomore Nate Hammond (six saves) and freshman Grant Theisinger (one save) combined on the shutout.
The Wreckers dominated the possession aspect of the game with senior Jake Davis winning 12 of 13 faceoffs and sophomore Brady Manning winning 10 of 14 draws.
With the win the Wreckers earn a rematch with FCIAC foe Greenwich and will look to avenge an early season setback to the Cardinals when the teams square off in the quarterfinal Saturday, June 7 at 1 p.m. Greenwich is the No. 6 seed. The winner will play either No. 2 Ridgefield or No. 7 Glastonbury in the June 11 semifinals (time and game location to be determined).
