WESTPORT–Staples boys golf has taken on some of the top teams in and out of Fairfield County–and The Wreckers have posted some impressive scores and mixed team results.
Wins over Westhill, St. Joseph and Danbury highlighted the start of the campaign and the Wreckers had a hard-fought loss to Fairfield Prep, the state’s fourth ranked team in Division 1.
A combination of scheduling and rain postponements put the team on a week-and-a-half hiatus before this week and the Wreckers are busy with match play going forward.
On Aug. 19, the Wreckers opened the season with a 146-170 win on the road over Westhill. Jordan Benaderet was the medalist with a match low score of 34. Next came a 141-135 setback to Fairfield Prep at Longshore Golf Course on Aug 20; Benaderet again led the way, this time carding a 32.
The Wreckers won at St. Joseph 162-170 behind James Moneyhon’s 36 on Aug. 26 and defeated host Danbury the next day, 158-166 with Moneyhon recording a 37 to set the pace.
Back at it this week, the Wreckers, currently No. 7 in the D-1 rankings, visited top seed New Canaan on Tuesday and fell 155-149. Moneyhon and Benaderet each carded a 38 for medalist honors. Also scoring for Staples were Evan Sealove with a 39 and Trenton Armstrong with a 40. Two scores that did not count in the match were turned in by Henry O’Keeffe (35) and Justin Goldshore (40)
On Wednesday, the Wreckers hosted No. 6 Wilton and was edged 149-150. Benaderet led the way with a 36. Sealove carded a 38, O’Keeffe 39 and Armstrong 37. Goldshore (36) and Moneyhon (42) turned in solid efforts that were not part of the scoring.
Staples is home for back-to-back matches Monday and Tuesday against Stamford and Norwalk, respectively, teeing off against the Wreckers at 3:15 p.m.
