WESTPORT–The Staples girls basketball team, No. 3 in the Division II bracket, defeated No. 3 Lyman Hall 59-30 in first-round State Tournament action at home on Saturday. With the win, the Wreckers will host No. 14 Fairfield Warde in the second round Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. In an all-FCIAC matchup, Warde beat No. 19 Ridgefield 48-31 to advance.

Staples led Lyman Hall 13-8 after one quarter and pulled ahead 36-13 at the half. The Wreckers were paced by Addie Talbott with 14 points, four points, eight rebounds and four steals. 

Chloe Smith had nine points, seven rebounds and four steals of her own. Freya Harvey logged eight points, four rebounds and a steal. Marley Belzer and Riley Caney each contributed six points.

The winner of the Staples-Warde matchup advances to Friday’s quarterfinals against either No. 11 South Windsor or No. 27 Fairfield Ludlowe.
