WESTPORT – Coming off two tough road losses, against Danbury and Greenwich, the Staples Wreckers returned to their home court yesterday afternoon with one simple goal in mind – to win the game. The Lady Wreckers clinched a hard-fought game and beat the Kolbe Cathedral Cougars, 50-44.
The game was tied 24-24 at the half. It was an exciting half, filled with back-to-back scores and great defense from the Cougars. Kolbe Cathedral displayed their athleticism on the court by forcing turnovers from Staples and seizing second-chance opportunities.
However, in the third quarter, the momentum of the game shifted towards Staples. Staples’ relentless offensive energy tired Kolbe.
Up by nine at the top of the fourth quarter, Staples slowed down the game and wound the clock down. The Cougars’s defense swarmed Staples and cut into Staples’ lead. But the valiant defensive comeback started too late to overcome Staples’ lead.
Final: Staples 50, Kolbe Cathedral 44.
Staples holds a 5-5 overall record. They face off at home against Westhill today at 7:00 p.m.
