WESTPORT — With the threat of “treacherous road conditions” caused by icy rain early Thursday, school officials have canceled classes today in the town’s public schools.

Supt. of Schools Thomas Scarice, in a statement emailed shortly after 5 a.m. this morning, said the school district offices also will be closed, and other “activities scheduled for today will be canceled or rescheduled for another date.”

The hazardous road conditions are forecast to last throughout most of the morning, so “conditions will not be any different even with a delayed opening,” the superintendent added in explaining the decision to instead close schools for the day.
