WESTPORT — The Staples boys tennis team improved its season record to 7-2 with wins over Wilton on April 23 and Bridgeport’s Central High last Thursday, rebounding from a 6-1 loss to visiting Greenwich on April 22.
In the 6-1 road victory over Wilton, Staples swept in singles play.
No. 1 player Noah Wolff defeated Akhil Vallabhajosula 6-4, 6-1; No. 2 Brett Lampert defeated James Morello in come-from-behind fashion, 6-7, 6-2, 6-1; No. 3 Lucas Ceballos-Cala beat Phin Wayland 6-0, 6-1, and No. 4 Aleko Vergakis topped Saakansh Khandelwal 6-2, 6-3.
In doubles play against Wilton, the top Staples tandem of Mattie Guadarrama/Hayden Frey defeated Cole Stevenson/Peter Reyes 6-2, 6-2. In second doubles, Wilton’s Griffin Kovack/Zack Coleman overcame the Staples tandem of Robert Jacob/Shreyas Gorre 1-6, 7-5, 6-2. At third doubles, Jared Even/Clint Graham of Staples defeated Hans Greene/Grayson Meyer 6-2, 6-0.
Staples blanked Central 7-0 at home. All of the wins came by 6-0, 6-0 scores with exception of third doubles, which won by default.
Wolff defeated Ricardo Marin; Lampert defeated Jameson Resean; Ceballos-Cala beat Vitor Nasciament, and Jacob beat Howayne Gayle. In doubles action, Vergakis/Kieran Anand defeated Edwin Menendez/Kyle Arante, and Henry Grossberg/Mark Suarez defeated Kaiden Ortiz/Okeith Samuels.
Staples is scheduled to visit Fairfield Warde, Fairfield Ludlowe and Darien this Monday through Wednesday, then host Trumbull on Thursday — all at 4 p.m. (Game schedules are subject to change; click for the latest updates.)
