WESTPORT — The Westport Country Playhouse, in three special presentations slated for May, spotlights an illustrious Supreme Court justice, the music of legendary Jewish composers and an award-winning Broadway star.
“All Things Equal: The Life and Trials of Ruth Bader Ginsburg,” a one-woman play by Tony Award-winning playwright Rupert Holmes, will be staged at 8 p.m. May 3-4 and 3 p.m. May 5.
Ginsburg, who served on the nation’s high court from 1993 until her death in 2020, will be portrayed by actress Michelle Azar.
The one-woman production explores the life and career of the jurist, sometimes called “the notorious RBG.”
Ginsburg’s life was one of challenges and milestones, which included “losing her mother the day before she graduated as valedictorian of her Brooklyn high school; being one of only nine young women studying law at Harvard while also raising a daughter and helping her husband battle cancer; fighting for women’s rights in the 1970s before condescending all-male courts, and taking courageous stands for human rights as a voice of reason amid a splintering and increasingly politicized Supreme Court,” according to playhouse publicity for the show.
“A Place For Us: A Celebration of Jewish Broadway,” with Ari Axelrod, will be presented at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 8.
Axelrod, returning to the playhouse after a sold-out performance last year, will perform selections of “crucial contributions to American musical theater of Jewish composers, such as Irving Berlin, Leonard Bernstein, Stephen Sondheim and Carole King,” according to publicity for the concert.
“When the world feels dark, and it feels like there’s no light to be found, Jews create light, whether it’s the glow of Shabbat candles or Broadway’s marquees. This show is a celebration of Jewish light,” Axelrod said in the publicity release.
“An Evening with Bernadette Peters,” featuring the three-time Tony Award winner, Golden Globe recipient, and Emmy and Grammy nominee, will be staged at 7 p.m. Sunday, May 19.
The singer/actress will perform musical selections by Rodgers and Hammerstein, Stephen Sondheim, Jerry Herman and others.
Peters recently appeared in the West End debut of “Old Friends,” showcasing the life and work of Stephen Sondheim, which is scheduled to come to Broadway next year.
Peters won Tony and Drama Desk awards for her performance in the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, “Song and Dance, and another Tony for her performance in “Annie Get Your Gun.”
Her Tony-nominated performances include: the Sam Mendes revival of “Gypsy,” in Neil Simon’s “The Goodbye Girl,” Stephen Sondheim’s Pulitzer Prize-winning musical “Sunday in the Park with George,” the Jerry Herman/Gower Champion musical, “Mack and Mabel,” and the Leonard Bernstein/Comden and Green musical, “On The Town.” In 2012, she received the Isabelle Stevenson Tony Award for her nonprofit, Broadway Barks.
Peters won a Golden Globe Award for her performance in the movie, “Pennies from Heaven,” and has appeared in more than 30 other films.
