WESTPORT – The Staples boys soccer team broke their scoring drought in a big way Monday, in a wild match. Goals by Dylan Hoke, Avery Mueller and Matt Shackelford staked the Wreckers to a 3-0 lead against Westhill, at Wakeman Field.
But the Vikings stormed back. A penalty kick, and two strikes off defensive errors drew the visitors level, with 14 minutes to go.
The match ebbed back and forth. Suddenly, with just 1:44 to play, Shackelford picked up a loose ball 40 yards from goal. He took a couple of touches, then fired into the far right side. His blistering shot caught everyone by surprise – and gave Staples a hard-fought 4-3 win.
The Wreckers, now 2-2-1, face Wilton away on Thursday. Game time is 5 p.m.
