WESTPORT–Reese Watkins scored three times and Caleb Tobias added a goal and three assists, as the Staples boys soccer team stormed past Trumbull 6-2 at Loeffler Field.
The win was significant in several ways. It unleashed the potent Wrecker offense. It proved the Westporters’ grit; after leading 3-0, they let up a pair of goals – then just as quickly regained control.
And it was the Wreckers’ first win against the Eagles since 2010. Over that span, Staples lost eight games to Trumbull, and tied five. The Eagles had the Westporters’ number.
Today, the Wreckers changed that. Besides Watkins’ goals, they got scoring from Tobias, Will Adams and Ryan Thomas. There were assists too from Murilo Moreno, Jack Foster and Matthew Jordan.

“This was an important win,” said head coach Dan Woog. “It’s great for confidence, for trust in teammates – and for knowing we can come back, under pressure.”
The Wreckers – now 5-1-3 – have a big week coming up. They’re away three times next week: at Stamford on Monday, Central on Wednesday, and St. Joseph on Friday.
