ENFIELD–Just 14 minutes into yesterday’s match at Enfield, the Eagles did what no team had done in 6 previous contests: They scored from the field against Staples.

The only other goal against — in the previous game — was a penalty kick.

How did the Wreckers react?

They tied the contest three minutes later. They went ahead two minutes after that.

They padded their lead less than a minute before halftime.

Then they exploded for five goals in the first nine minutes after intermission.

Staples kept the pedal to the metal, en route to an 11-2 rout.

The victory — a non-league affair — ups the Wreckers’ record to 7-0-0.

They have a big match Wednesday at 6:15 p.m. against Norwalk, at West Rocks Middle School, then finish the week with a 4 p.m. Friday game against St. Joseph.

Perhaps the long bus ride north contributed to Staples’ less-than-stellar start. But after surrendering that goal, they went to work.

In the 17th minute Greyson Downes’ corner kick was headed on by Thomas Pretty. The defender goes forward on set pieces. Noah Rossoni added his own header, over the keeper.

Two minutes later, Adrian Rodriguez fired home from 25 yards out.

The third goal of the half, just before time, began when defender Peter Nelson drove down the left side. He slotted a pass to Ethan Katzner, who found Kai Massicott. The junior pounced, in front of the box.

The whistle had scarcely blown when the second half barrage began. Rossoni drove baseline, and assisted on Pretty’s pretty strike.

One minute later, Gus Reyna finished a corner kick. Massicott took 2 touches before scoring; then Jaden Waldman slammed home a rebound. Nelson then assisted on Katzner’s header.

With more than half an hour still to play, the score was 7-1.

As has happened often this year, the Westporters’ dominance made the second half almost painful to watch.

Beckham Martino’s first two varsity goals — the first a volley, the second a long strike into the upper left corner — bookended Sasha Cherep’s first varsity tally.

Enfield’s second goal looked far offside. But by then, the match was long over.
