BRIDGEPORT —In what may be the quickest turnaround in Staples boys soccer history, the Wreckers on Saturday defeated Harding 18 hours after their FCIAC playoff hopes were dashed by Ridgefield.

Staples, with an 8-7-0 record, faced the 4-6-2 Bridgeporters in a non-league match. Originally scheduled for mid-season, it was postponed due to the death of a Staples student. The Presidents — former members of the FCIAC — now play a largely independent schedule.

The Wreckers’ first-ever visit to Lewis Field produced an 8-0 win. The victory gives them a slight bump in the state tournament seeding. Pairings will be announced later this month. The tourney begins next month.

Goals on the very narrow field came from Jonny Costello and Emmett Nivaud (two each), Noah Rossoni, Will Murray, Lucas Alarcon and Adrian Rodriguez. Assists were registered by Gabe Duque, Perrin Root and Alarcon.
