WATERBURY — A superb year of excellent, entertaining soccer ended cruelly for Staples Wednesday night.

A second-half goal off a corner kick gave Farmington a 1-0 win over the Wreckers, in the state LL state tournament.

Staples controlled much of the match, dictating tempo and style. They contained Farmington’s most dangerous player, Matt Cence, outshot the upstaters 17-2 and had nine corner kicks, to the River Hawks’ one.

But though they fired from all angles, and earned three corners in the waning minutes, the upstaters’ defense held strong.

Head coach Dan Woog said, “I’m gutted for our guys. They gave it everything they had. They did everything we asked, and they did it with passion and poise. They had a superb season, and they are even more superb young men. For all they accomplished, they have no hardware to show. That will hurt for a long time. But I hope they realize what they’ve done, for Staples soccer, their school and their town. They are as worthy of wearing the Staples ‘S’ as any championship team.”

The Wreckers finish the season with a record of 13-3-4. Eighteen seniors graduate: Will Adams, Marius Ekeberg, Jack Foster, Brewster Galley, Matthew Genser, Jacob Greenberger, Bruno Guiduli, Jackson Hochhauser, Matthew Jordan, Spencer Levine Tim Liakh, Aidan Mermagen, Murilo Moreno, Jaden Mueller, Ryan Thomas, Caleb Tobias, Sam Vannart, and Reese Watkins. Thomas Corridon missed the entire year, with an ACL injury.
