The Staples High School boys hockey team played consecutive games against Westhill-Stamford in a home-and-home set, Feb. 4 and 8.

The Wreckers, after falling 7-0 on home ice at the Milford Ice Pavilion in the first game, lost 5-2 at Terry Conners Rink in Stamford in the rematch.

In the most recent game, Staples got a goal and assist from Tyler DiMaio, a net-finder off the stick of Jameson Russell, and an assist from Domenic Petrosinelli.

Westhill-Stamford outshot the Wreckers 40-15. The last goal was an empty-netter. Goaltender Aaron Kail made 35 saves for the Wreckers.

Staples opened the scoring when Russell lit the lamp off an assist from DiMaio. Westhill-Stamford seized a 2-1 lead after one period of play with two late-stanza goals.

Westhill-Stamford’s Ian Duggan scored the lone second-period goal and netted another early in the third. A quick-response goal by DiMaio made it a 4-2 game early in the final period, but the Wreckers could not get any closer.

Staples will take on Trumbull at 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, in Milford.
