
WESTPORT–Staples football dropped a 27-6 decision to visiting St. Joseph of Trumbull on Saturday morning.
The day-after-Halloween matchup proved to be a tricky one for the Wreckers who were unable to treat their fans to a victory. Staples fell to 5-2 and the Cadets, ranked No. 2 in Class M, improved to 5-2.
Quarterback Nick Weil completed 12 of 27 pass attempts for 98 yards and rushed three times for 45 and the team’s lone touchdown.
Chaz Darby had 10 carries for 54 yards. Justin Halky hauled in four receptions for 56 yards.
Staples is ranked fourth in Class LL and is in the running for a home quarterfinal-round state playoff game. The team has a tough test ahead as 7-0 New Canaan visits Friday, Nov. 7 at 7 p.m. New Canaan is the top-ranked team in Class L.
