WESTPORT — Nearly a year after an oh-so-close state championship loss to Fairfield Warde, the Staples High baseball team opens the new season with a rematch against its FCIAC foes.

Warde edged Staples 2-1 in 10 innings of last spring’s Class LL pinnacle contest. The Wreckers’ new season gets underway when the teams face off again at 1 p.m. Saturday in Fairfield.

Staples aims to again be in the mix, and perhaps challenge for a title later this spring.

“Expectations are very high. The key is staying healthy,” Staples Coach Jack McFarland said.

The Wreckers have a wealth of talent back on the diamond. They are led by captains catcher Max Jossen, outfielders Jack Farnen and Luke Oakley, and pitcher Nick Porzio.

Other key players in the lineup include infielder/pitcher Andrew Oppenheimer, infielder/pitcher Noah Saed, pitchers Kai Nee and Mason Tobias, and pitcher/first baseman Rhys Jamali.

Pitching and defense are key factors for winning championships and McFarland said the strengths of his team are overall athletic ability, strong pitching and defense.

The Wreckers will be home at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday to host Greenwich. (Game schedules are subject to change; click for the latest updates.
